This week marks the one-year anniversary of the first Shy Town Girls novel. On December 8, 2012, Jennifer Yih, Katie Leimkuehler, and Melissa Wilson launched the first novel after months of working as co-writers and publishers.
That first novel revolved around Bobbie and was written primarily by Jen. A lot has changed since then—the ladies have released a second novel and entered new phases of their lives. Jen took a little time this week to reflect on just how much can happen in a year:
I can’t believe it’s been a year since Book One (Bobbie) was released. I also can’t believe how much my life has changed since the book’s debut.
Obviously graduating from college is a rattling new experience for anyone. Finally, after all those years we spend in college racing to the finish line, we’re rewarded with total independence with nothing but a diploma and the knowledge in our heads, hoping to make the best of it.
In the past year, I ended up falling in love, moving to an island out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and now live in a little studio apartment across from the beach with my boyfriend, Alex, and our dog, Mowgli. We’re not rich or poor, but we’ve quickly found out the stark reality that life is truly about who you spend it with, where you spend it, and what you do with your free time.
Alex is a photographer—much like Oliver in Book One if any of you didn’t catch on to that—and I’m always writing, whether it’s for my job here in Honolulu or during Sunday morning breakfast with the boys. As far as my writing, a writer really only grows from what they experience, paying close attention to the details, and making sure to write it all down. I’ll have to let the readers be the judge of whether or not my writing’s improved!
They’ll get to judge soon enough, as Jen continues to work hard on Book Three – Ella!
