Author Katie Leimkuehler has been very busy since the release of her book Shy Town Girls book 2, Ivy. Interested to see where she’s at now, Shy Town Girls blogger Bailey Allen was able to catch up with Katie about her exciting move and tips she has for other 20-somethings!
You enjoyed great success with Shy Town Girls book 2 Ivy. How does it feel to be a published author?
It takes a lot of hard work, dedication and persistence to become a published author, but it’s definitely worth it all. I feel honored to have been able to write a book in under eight months and see it published in a year. It was definitely a dream come true to see my own words in print.
What has becoming an author taught you about starting your career? What advice can you give to other 20’somethings trying to launch their careers?
Writing and publishing Shy Town Girls taught me so much. I think the most important lesson 20-somethings can learn is to go after what you want. Take initiative in your career and on your dream. If you don’t work on it, who else will? I think it’s essential first to know what you want to accomplish, plan out how you will achieve it and connect with people who can help and inspire you along the way.
Recently you made a move to Denver, Colorado. What has been the most exciting thing about moving to a new city?
Denver is wonderful city and filled with people who are focused on living first and career second, which has been the most refreshing aspect about living here. My favorite part of Denver is a tie between the constant sun shining and the mountains in our backyard. You can’t really beat that.
Colorado is very different from Chicago. What do you miss most about the Windy City?
I miss the summers in Chicago the most. They are short and fleeting, but the city comes alive in a way I don’t think any other place does
Moving to a new city can be a little intimidating sometimes. Can you offer any tips for other 20 something’s who might be about to take this next step in their lives?
I think if you move to a new city you just need to be open minded to the people you meet, the way people live and the opportunities that come to you. Say “yes” to everything. Explore as much as possible and get involved in sports, group activities and organizations to meet new people and expand your network and most importantly enjoy it!
Tell me a little about your job at GlobaLinks Learning Abroad.
My job at International Studies Abroad / GlobaLinks Learning Abroad focuses on digitally marketing our study abroad programs all over the world. I run and oversee all our social media strategies, #ISA Twitter Chats, marketing campaigns and initiatives. I also manage our content marketing through several blogs and oversee our student blogger program that has nearly 60 students in it. We work with students abroad to share their stories, photos and adventures in our ISA Student Blog. It’s very rewarding to work in a field that I’m passionate about while spreading the word on how impactful traveling and living abroad can be. When I was at Miami University, I studied abroad in Luxembourg and it changed my life. In some small way, I hope I’m contributing to our students’ life-changing study abroad experience and can only hope they find a way to share their love of travel with others.
