Sugar Chic Designs founder Amy DiTomasso Sit Down
Amy DiTomasso is the founder of the boutique Sugar Chic Designs, we sat down with her and talked about her transition from working hard as a stay at home mom to working hard as a successful entrepreneur. Amy told us about her unwavering passion for detail, event planning and sweet table designs—and how her ability to combine them all brought her success.
1. What is Sugar Chic Designs and where did the inspiration come from?
With an eye for style and passion for detail, Sugar Chic Designs brings your event to life with couture dessert table designs and sweet candy bars, fit for every occasion. A boutique a la carte service, Sugar Chic Design’s dessert tables will inspire your guests, creating memories they won’t soon forget. Each table includes hand-selected treats and colorful candies, customized to the event’s theme and color palette. Sugar Chic Designs alluring tables are the perfect way to celebrate showers, weddings, birthday parties, bar/bat mitzvahs, and more, with a trendy and modern touch.
I was inspired by Amy Atlas, as I like to call her, the original guru of the sweet table movement. Amy designs sweet tables in NYC and across the country—her work is always beautiful and elegant. I love her sweet table creations and no one in the Midwest was providing a dedicated sweet table design service within the event industry.
2. Who is the most inspiring woman in your life?
My mom has always led the charge. She modeled a great deal of strength and perseverance for me and my sisters growing up. No matter life’s twists and turns, I always have faith things will be okay and that things are as they were intended to be. I think she instilled that in us. Only when I really started living it and modeling it for my own children did I feel the value and truth of simply having faith.
3. What has been the biggest challenge in your career?
Keeping the business end of things organized—I love the creative process but I really have to make an effort to keep better records—and just generally get a little more serious and organized!
A hard won confidence in myself. I have never felt as fulfilled and happy as I have the last two years—creating this path for myself has been a blessing. So many new doors and opportunities have presented themselves since I began to get out into the world after being a stay at home mom for 10 years. Once I learned to trust myself, a whole other world seemed to open up. I’ve worked with generous, brilliant, creative people—I’ve learned collaboration is key, especially when styling on set (I freelance as a set stylist; represented by Factor Artists Chicago). Gosh, there are so many “rewards” I could list but most importantly, I’m just genuinely happy to wake up every day and create something. J I used to be over-scheduled, uber-organized and regimented. I am still over-scheduled, but now I love discovering what the day has in store for me.
5. Did you always know what you wanted to do and if not how did you figure it out?
No. Way. Looking back I could never have imagined I’d ever step out of my comfort zone—I was perfectly happy as a stay at home mom. But when my youngest began full day kindergarten I felt it was time to invest a little time in pursuit of something all my own. I made a list of things I loved doing, started researching a little and just took it one step at a time. One thing truly lead to another…and here I am.
6. Looking back, what would you tell your 20-year-old self?
You are enough.
