With the first Shy Town Girls novel, author Jennifer Yih created the romantic Bobbie Bertucci, a young woman stuck in an unhealthy relationship and unfulfilling career. She was the “new girl” to 721 Dearborn, and it was through her fresh eyes that readers first came to know the Shy Town Girls.
Jennifer used Bobbie’s character to talk about growing up and becoming an independent woman–one who isn’t afraid of taking chances or standing on her own two feet. In the beginning, Bobbie didn’t think she had the strength to move on from Charlie, but over the course of Book One, she not only shed her jerk of a boyfriend but also realized she could step out of an industry she hated and chase her real dream of becoming a lawyer.
The hardships Bobbie faced are no unfamiliar to girls in our twenties–finding yourself (and your independence) is what growing up is about. But now Jennifer is penning Book Three from the character of Ella, a totally different girl with all new problems. What will she have to say about being a twentysomething this time around?
“I don’t want to give too much away, but I’d like traditional, reserved Ella to be pushed to her limits in Book Three,” Jennifer confessed. “And I don’t want to portray Ella’s character that way because she’s the shyest, clumsiest, and most awkward of the girls. She is not going to realize that she needs to change who she is. I rather have Ella discover that it’s OKAY to celebrate her multi-faceted levels of dysfunction and explore her traditional beauty, but at the same time, challenge herself by experiencing new and discomforting things.”
Bobbie’s journey wasn’t all about romance, but she did realize things about herself by having very different experiences with Charlie and her longtime friend, good guy Oliver. So will Ella follow a similar path?
The author is tight-lipped on this one.
“Ella doesn’t need romance or a stamp of approval to find this ‘inner peace’ if you will, but maybe just a few unfortunate events that show her everyone’s human, including her,” Jennifer says.
Stay tuned for more clues as to what’s coming in Book Three, and let us know what you hope is on the horizon for Ella!
